Hmmm... I might be able to overtake you!
Not quite. Note the custom title. ;)
I've still got more posts, though! :P
Why didn't you keep Malignus as a name? Everyone knew who you were anyway.
It's not the number of posts that matters, it's the quality, steelfist. ;)
And malignus does have a knack for posting very high quality posts!
Besides, even if you managed to acquire the amount of stars you would not have the special golden ones, you will likely just have five of these tiny shiny stars.
Do you know, KZ, I thought for a second that you were implying that my posts were low quality.
Not at all, not at all, steelfist: I was pointing out to the folks at large that it's better to write a few, high quality posts, than many low quality ones. As I'm sure you're aware, there were a couple of users on the old forums who went for quantity over quality on occaison.
Anyhow, my hope is that through natural desire to post interesting stuff and constructive participation, with time, we'll get a few of us into the high rankings, keeping this a high standard, entertaining and vibrant place. ;)
Yeah no one wants a posting prat, Like I have been in the past unfortunately. I hope to not fall back into that habit though.
And just in the old forums I was closing to the rank of saviour. >.< Have to start it all over. I'll be the first one in the new forums to get it!
Well, kivatti, good luck with that, just make sure you that your post quality doesn't suffer 'cause of the desire to get the highest ranking ;)
Ah. I try to keep the quality good. As in the last forums, I got my rank very high by posting into the forum games section. This time I try to join the conversations oin the other sections too tho. I always kinda came too late and would have to read 7 pages of long text to join in, so I didn't bother to join them anymore.
Why does everyone care about ranking in the forums?
Same reason that people care about leveling up in games, I'd imagine. ;)
But leveling up in games is to get better. This is just saying you posted a lot of stuff.
Well, what's better: a Newbie or a Hero? :P
True that.
an old fad that never really caught on "n't n't fact"

May I suggest adding a new rank at 1 post and at 20 posts? I have no solid reason, other than up to 2000 everything was looking like an exponential growth: posts=10
rank/3 rounded to a single digit (followed by zeros).
So, I'm suggesting 0, 1,2,5, 10,20,50, 100,200,500, 1000,2000. From 2000 on it would take quite a long time to get 1000 posts, so I think that intervals of 1000 might be reasonable to have (I made a bit more than 1600 posts in one year on the old forums, which would mean about 3 years to reach Savior). At 1 post one could become a beggar and at 10 posts one could become a raider and mechanic would be reached at 20 posts.
Is there an easy way to distinguish posts made in forum games and posts elsewhere? And if it's possible, is it a good idea to posts in the forum games count less (perhaps 1/2) than posts elsewhere?
I personally like the current system. 8 more till blue cape.^^
I actually just added a new rank at 1 post yesterday: Ghost. It wouldn't be much trouble to add in a new one at 25.
Heh, good. I think that's quite original, having a rank for 1 post, but useful as well, since something like 95% of the 14000 users never posted more than 1 post.
By the way, is it possible to completely remove post count from forum games section? 'Cause those posts do not in any way constructively contribute to the forums discussions in general, other than providing a bit of entertainment (which is good), but if the ranking system is to be of any value (reputation/repsect/weight, etc), then if posts outside the forum games count, it will be an indicator of how much a person has been active on the general discussions (as there have been users with posts into the hundreds who have barely contributed anything elsewhere). This would make the attainment of each rank be more worthwhile and something to be even more pleased about.
That's not a bad idea. I'll do that.
darn so close to blue cape but I would like to fell like I have earned it because alot of my posts are from forum games.
Hence the whole point of only non-game posts couting ;) People will feel they've actually earned it by doing something useful- anyone can write a word in a game, but not everyone can give an intelligent and useful imput into forum discussion. The solution is simple: to get cracking with writing useful and interesting posts in other section of the forums as well.
what about like say an role playing game do you think those posts should count because usually it's something creative or what not, or have it count for only part of a post like .5 of a post or something?
If the role playing involves the Telepath world, then I think the posts should count. Simply because they can help develop story lines for the game if Mr. Stern ever gets a mental block.
This goes down in the creative writing section of the forums, not the forum games, usually, so that's fine. There is also the technical side of things- it's much simpler to discount any posts made in one section of the forums, rather than selectively allow posts to be counted in certain threads.
By the looks of it, the posts that were made in the games section before the changes still count towards the total post number, so quite a few posters have a large in-forum games post cushion anyway, which will more than compensate the lack of post counting from role-playing forum games with lots of content.
What's star power
the amount of stars is simply a visual tool to show the users posting prowess. For instance, even though me and KZ are both blue capes he has more stars (they're cooler too) to show he's a mod.
Mechanic Captain!
Red Cape!
im about to get promoted to blue cape. i dont think anyone will make saviour at this rate but im going to at least go for white cape
I don't know where the right place to ask this is, but i just realized Ertxiem has become a global moderator, the same rank KZ used to have. Is he replacing KZ?
Nope. Anyone else may want to take a look at Craig's answer (http://sinisterdesign.net/forum/index.php?topic=31.msg8027#msg8027) (I suppose mikew781 already read it ;) ).
Congrats Ert!
Finally a Cape, and this is my one-hundred-first post.
Cape again!
Cape!
*sniffle* On the old forums I was a blue cape...
And now I'm what, a Mechanic?
nope you're a :-\
If the forum games counted, we'd all be saviours.
i dont know about savior but im sure we would all at least be close to black cape.
lol, back when I was new and KZ was posting right after me I got quite a few in my count.
I fell like such a newbie, maybe because I kinda am.
You'll get there. Unless you play the forum games excessively. *cough*me*cough*
Thanks for being nice. That's really refreshing. These are totally the best forums ever. ;D
Me too
It doesn't take long to be considered an 'Old-Timer'. Or, at least, it doesn't take long to not be considered a newbie.

Aye, and we do try, usually, to be different from other forums and keep up the standard. I would rather hope most people would want to participate for an interesting discussion around here, to have some fun, and not to get into a flaming war.
Meanwhile, steelfist has it spot on. From my point of view, true "old timers" recently have been Ertxiem, ender, LethalLaurie, Craig and I, of which 2 are no longer currently active- 3 came with the first wave since the beginning of old forums, the other 2 same in a second wave. The rest of the folks usually hangs out for about 3 months-6 months then dissapears into the wind. Then you have the "periodical activity" category, and there are quite a few of those. But in any case, it doesn't matter if you're a newbie or not- you have an opinion and we'll listen to it if you would like to voice it.
In any case, rank-wise, it take people usually a year to get within the 1000 post count, and then some. Hopefully, some of you will be saviours and be well regarded at the same time.
How many saviours were there on the old forums? I know ender was one and KZ and CraigStern/Mal probably were...
That would be ender and I. Postcount-wise, malignus didn't quite reach that upper limit (but quality sure did beat quantity there ;) ).
I would probably be fairly close to rivalling your post count, KZ, if the forum games still counted. Still, I understand why they don't.
Very little, if anything, is contributed to the forums in the Forum Game section; thus, the posts don't count.
I wonder how long it will take me to reach saviour, if I ever do...
You're only around 4974 posts away!
I'm back at Blue Cape. must... get... saviour...
I do post in other places than the forum games, of course, just not very often. General Discussion counts toward posts, though, doesn't it?

Hey I've been around almost six mothns and I haven't disaperred into the wind altough as you said I might belong in the periodical activity. From my point of view at least I think that I could be up-and-running for the next "old timer". I mean plently of people know and like me so the chances are good...
I was a fairly active poster on the old forums, and KZ hasn't listed me as an old timer. So, while you aren't considered a newbie, it will no doubt be a while until you are considered an old timer. For that matter, it will probably take a while for me to be considered an old timer.
Meanwhile, I am attempting to stay away from the Forum Games section. I am a very active poster, and my 'post count to length of time on forums' ratio is embarrassing.
Good. Resist the temptation, Steelfist.
I vaguely remember you, Steelfist, but I left moderately soon after you joined.
I vaguely remember you, too, Brom.
In other news, I have been resisting the Forum Games, and have only posted infrequently.
And I remember all of you, folks, for I have read practically every post ever made on the old and new forums (save the occaisonal games section post).
It's all relative, really- for me "old-timers" are those who joined back in the day two, three years ago.
In any case, it's good to see people trying to increase their activity in the rest of the forums, that's why the post count doesn't go up in the game section- this way post count and, through it, rank obtained is increased in value. I am thinking of suggesting removing "general discussion" from post count as well, as there are quite a few forum-game like, pointless threads on it of late.
Well, I think Craig said he didn't intend to, but which one of the topics it was on I can't remember.

There should be a section of it where the posts don't count, but as Craig has said himself, some of them are useful threads....
And, of course, this would mean I'd have to find somewhere else to post, because I now really want to get my post count up.

Well, that's why I really liked having the "off-topic" section in the old forums, which here one could disable the post count on and make everyone happy, methinks. And then there could be other sections for general discussion that can be considered worth having to contribute to the users post count. In any case, that would, at least, make the post count and ranking more respectworthy and more pleasing to attain.
This seems a good compromise. But it'll give you/Craig/Ert a lot more work moving threads
If it helps make a better forum, go ahead.

This has been implemented as of earlier today: all posts in the general section no longer increase the user's post count.
I'm trying to become a saviour. Anyways, this helps me out when I want to know when I will rank up.
Piece of advise: Don't spam.
Uhhh, not at all soon there's not a single savior yet, it won't be a while until anyone becomes a savior.
Out of curiosity, what character would be considered a "Savior"?
The Hero/Main/Duvalier?
Quote from: Ertxiem on March 13, 2012, 07:28:10 PMThe Hero/Main/Duvalier?
Which Hero is "The Hero"? I guess the TRPG2 Hero would be the Savior of the Shadowlands for killing the Queen, and Duvalier would be a Savior for freeing Gifted people and returning Ravinale to democracy.
To me, both the TRPG2 Main and Duvalier (aka TSoG Hero) are saviours in their own time and place.
