Title: Why cheat?
Post by: Frosty on February 18, 2010, 08:54:11 PM
A cheat is a way of manipulating a game MADE BY THE PRODUCER OF THE GAME. But why do they even put them in the game? All they do is let the newbies go around and feel accomplished, when really, they couldn't beat the game without help from cheating.

It makes testing the game easy. Plus, if you beat the game about 10 or so times, and you're just playing casually, you could cheat to make things go faster.

I cheat, and play on easy, after beating it without cheating on brutal, simply to skip through the storyline looking for bugs. plus, you gotta make sure there's no bugs with the cheats.^^
From what I read somewhere Craig wishes this game to be the best. and to be the best you have to appeal to everyone. er most every one. and I assure you, for every 1 non-cheater there are 5 cheaters to take his or her place.
Also, those Newbies may have really low self esteem and need the boost they get from demolishing Bosses with a single mind blast (that no-matter how powerful, it does no more damage to that annoying patron of the mob following you after your rescue of your parents, I really wish he would simply explode and make every one flee in terror of the "Dark Ones and Their Angel of Wrath", when you deal 90damage in one hit...)

Zhamphir and Yogc, you have brought up good points, but if you beat the game about ten times, why cheat? They have easy mode so you can go fast. I suppose it does help for testing though.

And Zhamphir, they would kill the boss in one mindblast, but then they might get to the point of trying without, and then failing (they would be too used to cheating). But I suppose I am a rare person that thinks cheating is stupid.

I don't know I see where you're coming from frosty but it makes things a bit easier for people not good at strategy games to get the full experience of the game without them getting frustrated and quitting the game.

Not quite the full experience, it lacks the challenge that some games (namely TRPG games) are suppose to have.

Well, some people still would like to see the entire story with the challenge level simply being too high, so one way around it is resorting to cheating. Don't forget, also, that there are very many different cheats, not all of them giving the player a lot of advantage. For instance, there is one that gives you 6000 gold. Imagine you've played through the game once and don't have a single save file from before you have to choose your elemental preference in attacks, and you want to play the game with a different set of elemental attacks. So, by using this cheat, you quickly level up your team, go through the first missions very quickly up to the point where you choose the element you want to play in, and voila- the cheat simply saves you time by allowing you not to farm gold.
Then again, if you played the game 10 times, you really can't be asked to play through certain aspects of it yet again, but you want to try out a few nifty tactics- so you go and use an appropriate cheat that allows you to try them out without the need to take the time through grinding out the rest of the game. Or, you do this for entertainment- see if you can beat an entire battlefield with just the Hero, after spending 10000 gold on him. And how about 5000 gold, or 50000?
Then there are, as mentioned earlier, bug testing purposes, which save the beta testers a lot of time and see if the game functions properly: not only can we save time by not farming gold, we can also quickly verify if things like elemental resistances, extra dialogue options for high aptitude or high personality work.
Again, there is that point mentioned above, where for universal appeal everyone has to be able, in some form or other, to finish the game, and it's pretty difficult to cater to both the causal gamers and the hardcore games, as the difficulty slopes will be completely different in the two extreme cases. Inclusion of cheats allows the developer to greatly reduce the degree to which the difficulty curve has to be spread out across available difficulties towards the lower end, thus saving a lot of time and still allowing for customer satisfaction.

One thing, if you beat the game on brutal, you should already know the bugs, so why if you already know? As for bugs with the cheats, the only bug they can have is not working, or doing something wrong. Both in which you would be totally oblivious to.

So far, KZ is the only one to come up with incredible points on why people should cheat. He makes a ton of sense on why they are there, and it makes sense. The only thing is, there may be just as many pros and cons about cheating. So far this is what I have:

Pros:

1) Helps with testing.
2) Lets the game attract a wide variety of people.
3) Some do almost nothing.
4) Allows attempts at new tactics.
5) Occasionally helps self esteem.

Cons:

1) Takes away challenge sometimes, making some people get bored and quit.
2) Usually the self esteem is false belief, which if noticed, will cause a bigger drop than gain.
3) Some make the game whiz by so fast, the player doesn't know whats going on (experience, I have cheated before).
4) A few people will know how to hack or glitch it no matter how hard you try, those people don't need it.
5) Slows down game progress by making more programming for it.
6) May affect the game in unkown, unintended ways.

And that is what I have collected. I will just edit this post if anything comes by to add on to it. The most important pro is 2, and con is 1.

The game is in beta, updated continuously, every change in the code can have odd effects in other areas, such as one glitch was pointed out with the new GUI that I think KZ discovered that a certain cheat teleports the main to Crypt 2
I think you might have missed the part that this is still in development.

I never knew that, and you just gave me another con to add.

I thought that cheat was made specifically for testing out Crypt 2.

That's... possible, and probable, but it will likely be taken out later on

All the cheats were introduced quite some time before Crypt 2 was made and with a purpose to be used by players in the final version of the game.
(Though there was one cheat, MrMoneyBags, which was given to us due to Craig having to rewrite the engine, and effectively nullifying all our old saves, and him feeling bad about it: it gives the player 6000 gold to start with.)

You know the only exemplary post here was KZ because he is neither with or against the concept of cheating. It seems to me their are very few who are neutral to any kind of argument.

^wuta suckup

It is clear there isn't any reason not to include cheats.

If you don't want to cheat nobody is making you.

And if you do that's a plus.

It isn't a MP game.

The Question for you Frosty is Why Not Cheat?
To keep the fun in the game, to not make the game accidentaly glitch at random times, to fell accomplished at the fact that I won the game, and to not get overconfident with myself. You want me to keep going?

And  this thread can prove that (http://sinisterdesign.net/forum/index.php?topic=277.0) I'm not Presintiment.

I only cheat, after I beat the game. It gives me some fun to do while I wait for new games to come out! But ya, I don't think cheating and beating the game is good, because you didn't beat the game!

Agree! I usually cheat just to know the story.
