Do you speak Shakespearen?
« on: October 02, 2011, 02:48:30 PM »

I don't. So please tell me what was just said to me.

Prithee allow thine ears to unfold and my bottle to uncork,
Pour vernacular of century’s past into thine ears so I may,
And absorbent will be the true quality of thou’s brain.

For ‘tis not the mere manner of speech that doth be repeated,
But parallel there must be the muse and the art,
For if neither exists, thou’s research of language,
Is but for naught.

"Please open your ears and let me talk,
and yammer at you about centuries that have already happened;
if you do that, you'll absorb stuff.

Because it isn't just the way of speaking that's repeated,
but there has to be parallel in muse and art,1
because if there isn't, your research of language
Won't do you any good."

"Thou's" really should be "thy."
What's the context? It's rather vernacular and metaphorical, so the more context you can give me, the better. But if that's enough, or you need me to simplify it further, let me know.

1I think this line basically says that for whatever reason you're learning about a certain language, you have to also learn about the things that you'd say with that language, or you're just be a longwinded idiot.
