Remington 597, Any Good?

I've got 125$ Saved up from my birthday last week (It was the 21st)

I'm looking into getting a Remington 597 .22 rounds. Is anyone here experience with the Remington or guns in general? I won't really be hunting much. Maybe just shooting ground squirrels near bristol when I have the time to drive out there.

While I don't have much of an opinion on the gun itself, and little experience with guns in general, I can't say anything about the gun. However, I have to ask, isn't killing small, defenseless animals a sign of a past, present, or future psychopath?

I honestly think it will be hard for me to take that first shot. But generally speaking, most squirrels die before their first birthday.

I personally still find it more than a bit immoral, but that's just my opinion.

Painless death, at the very least. Especially considering most of them die of starvation or being run over by cars.

To answer your question: based on this thread, the general consensus seems to be that it's highly accurate, but it has problems with certain magazines, the trigger is a little heavy, and the gun will backfire if you try to shoot it after a round fails to chamber completely. A fair number of people on the thread said their rifles would jam, and they had to contact Remington to get them working.

As for whether you should be going out of your way to shoot animals, well, that's another matter.

Ya know, I actually decided to go with the Marlin 795 (597 backwards. Whaaaaat?) because it is a pound lighter, 20 bucks cheaper, and has no waiting period. As in I walk into Gander Mt. and leave with it.
