Title: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo
Post by: KZ on February 05, 2010, 11:38:14 AM
Just to point out that this is not the Official TSoG Beta Demo thread, but rather something for when updates take some time to come, CraigStern can post here and tell us what aspects of the project he's currently working on, and that'll keep everyone happy and excited. :-P

Speaking of which, here's what I'm working on now:

--integrating the updated GUI into the game (this is taking a long time because this update affects almost every single thing you see in the game!)
--finishing Crypt 2

At this point, I think I might just release the next update with Crypt 2 partway done, then wrap it up over the following week.

hey you might have already said this some where but what type of code are you using for the game C+ or C++ or something else?

Hey there hellboy, I'm developing the game in Flash, which means I'm coding it in Actionscript (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActionScript).

By the way, CraigStern, will you be updating the twitter feed with your plans, as it hasn't been updated since last year?  Methinks a few people might be checking only twitter (as you used to update it on a very regular basis) and not be aware that, for instance, the forums have moved, etc.

Just curious, how soon will you be adding the new enemies from TPA2 to the TSoG map editor enemy set, as well as removing some bugs from it (is that low priority at the moment)?

There has already been discussion abou deeper downs in the old forums, and there will be a mission for it. The random battles will be removed, and CraigStern will add there something else.

Yep, that's the plan, at least it has been for about a year or so.  I would like to ask though, how many main-game quests are planned at this stage (ie would there be any changes due to the time taken to make TPA2)?

After the next mission or two, I plan to open up the game world a bit to player exploration, so you can take on various missions in a non-linear way. We'll see how things go. :)

Are you going to add orbs?

Because i am curious to know if you touch the orb will it give the same bonus as in TPRPG2?
Title: Re: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo

There already is one orb in the game. You can find it in the first crypt. (a side mission given by the librarian)

there are two orbs in the game, so far, and there is a walk-through, The Official Orb Walkthrough (http://sinisterdesign.net/forum/index.php?topic=51.0), depicting how to get them.

edit: It should work now.

A trick that you use yourself if you do a certain quest a certain way. I think what hellboy222 means, is that The Nameless One will eventually have a huge part to play. Probably something that involves him being not so nameless anymore. For instance, Baz is found out, his house is stormed by the cultists. The Nameless One, fearing his own life may be in danger intercedes and fights with amazing ferocity against the cultists. Then a captain frustrated at the loss of his men charges with the next wave. The nameless one's hood is knocked off and the Cultists captain immediatily recognizes The Nameless One. The Captain, stunned is surrounded by our armada and taken prisoner. This captain and The Nameless One have a long talk and the Captain joins our cause and It is revealed that The Nameless one is (for sake of example) Guy, and the Captain is none other than Anya.

thanks zhampir when I wrote that I was tired and my comp was messing up, I wonder craig are you gonna take a stab at romance or no if you could add it in correctly I think it would add a bit more character development for whomever the romance is in between.

on the contrary, a romance for Set all ready has potential in the game. Based on Set's character I believe a romance with him would be quite doable and likely very humorous.

A romance only works with major character development.  That seems hard to pull off in a flash game.

yeah it was more of a passing thought I thought would be interesting to talk about, I don't expect it to be implemented in the game.

It shouldn't be that hard. Time consuming, perhaps, but certainly not hard.

Developing a believable story line is the hard part, luckily Craig seems to be a very good story writer. Also, don't underestimate the talent here on the forums. Fans typically pour out some great, believable, workable, fan fiction.

Well, we certainly see something brewing for Set, possibly in form of comic relief. Then there is something between the Hero and Rahel that might start up, from the look of things. Then we have, completely on the side, but neveretheless revealing another side to romance- Malis. I also don't see why such things can't be pulled off, especially if TSoG is focussed on dialogue and there is a much deeper character development than in TRPG2 (at least, that's the aim, and so far it's been holding a much higher level).

I spent all day today putting in the code for battle sound effects. You won't see them in-game yet, of course, but I just thought I'd let everyone know what I've been doing. :)
Title: Re: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo
Post by: Presentiment on March 06, 2010, 10:00:27 PM
And I presume you decided to cross out ambushes as an option in the Deeper Downs?

They aren't ambushes anymore.

Not to mention, the Vengeance icon looks rather hideous. ;)

Also, for an attack you fight the Ravinale Guard at least twelve times for it is hideously weak. I thought it would be stronger than Vengeance in TRPG2.

Just a quick question: I see many small fixes from 10th march onwards via twitter, and I wonder when, or if, you'll be updating the open Demo? It seems that there is quite a lot of new material to be seen and tested, and am curious why you decided to go for one big release, rather than many small ones, like back in the day?

The short answer is, I'm preparing the first downloadable demo, and I want it to be as polished as possible so I can send it out to various websites and get coverage of the game. It's a marketing thing. :)

Hey guys, I thought you'd be interested to know that I've updated the online (in-browser) demo. It has all the new stuff I've implemented since releasing the downloadable demo a few weeks ago, including new AI for most enemies (some of the more specialized AI, like the AI for snipers and bronze golems, has not yet gotten a facelift).

Your old saves should work with the latest version, but you'll have to transfer them (http://sinisterdesign.net/forum/index.php?topic=357.0) to a new folder for the game to detect them, since I've changed the file name for the game.

Other than that, the only downside is that there won't be any music or sound effects while you're playing the browser version from here on in.

In the next update, can you please give us back Rahel? Its a pain to loose her, and i know you cant give us too much content, but maybe you could just make here appear again?

Also, are you going to/have you changed the formula for shadow blast to match the other elemental blasts?

Thank-you for stating this. I already know that, and have found the damage formulas for all of the Heros attacks. I was asking IF he was going to make it the same as the other elemental blasts. I in no way asked about what the difference was.

Title: Re: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo
Post by: KZ on June 24, 2010, 07:09:09 PM
I like the new AI, and although the new "hold" position does give unfair advantage to the player over the enemy, it does allow for greater flexibility in battle, so that's a go! Another interesting element is the restriction of sight in the basement, but surely given that the Hero can see the entire battlefield, the basements of the same size should be all visible to him? Or is that explained away by him concentrating extra hard during battle and getting tired relatively quickly, hence during "normal exploration" he is using the minimum of his scanning abilities?
I don't particularly like the addition of borders around areas- it makes the areas look smaller and unconnected/compartmentalised, somehow (and the idea of random chests just lying around... not sold on that - it made sense with just a couple of chests in TRPG2, but a random chest laying on the street next to the mansion isn't really that plausible- that would be something to be found in a shed, or the likes)- before that although one came across the borders, it felt almost like the Hero simply not wanting to venture outside those areas, so not really feeling limited, whilst these borders do put up a visible limitation on what the player can/cannot do. But overall- I like what I see!

I guess you can argue that the Sight is somehow hampered by a lack of light. As I understand, those rooms in Baz's cellar are pitch black, devoid of any light. If I remember correctly, none of the battle you fight take place in this complete darkness, so we can't draw any firm conclusions about Duvalier's ability to see the battlefield in one of those rooms. It may just be that he can't use the Sight in that situation.
Title: Re: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo
Post by: CraigStern on June 25, 2010, 12:02:44 AM
I'll quote my explanation on the front page (http://sinisterdesign.net/?p=519): :)

QuoteThe Sight is a technique that works by determining the location of nearby humans and other creatures through broad-based Scanning, then picking up their visual thought streams and compositing a picture of the battlefield. It isn't a direct, literal substitute for regular vision.

By contrast, it's a much harder process trying to directly figure out the shape of one's surroundings using psy when it's pitch dark. That's like the equivalent of groping around with one's hands with one's eyes closed. Which is why Duvalier can only manage to keep tabs on his immediate surroundings in pitch darkness.

As for adding fences and chests, those were in response to suggestions I received after releasing the first downloadable demo. Regarding the chests specifically, I'm willing to sacrifice a little realism for the sake of a more enjoyable experience exploring the game world. ;)

Finally, I'm not too concerned about letting players move "out of order"--it's been requested enough times from enough different places that I think it's important to help the game do well with new players, and with the nastier enemy AI, I also think it serves the role of providing a counter-balance to a game that would otherwise have become dramatically harder. (Try playing a new game on Hard or Brutal and just watch the enemies swarm Set and Duvalier!)
Title: Re: Progress of TSoG (aka TRPG3) Open Demo
Post by: KZ on June 27, 2010, 03:58:48 PM
Ok, just wondered! ;)

Well, that sacrifice of realism is a bit surprising in light of recent tendencies to make things look more realistic- what with the portrait changes and all.

What is the next major area currently under development?
