Title: Online games?
Post by: ArtDrake on June 16, 2012, 10:47:57 PM
So, I was wondering if there was any interest in forum members getting together to play other games (if that idea isn't blasphemy), against / alongside each other [at least until Telepath Tactics is up for playing]. I'm pretty much not in a position that's good for buying games, so for the moment it would have to be something free if I were to be involved (TF2, Blast Rage, Ace of Spades ...), and I know Buggy plays Minecraft (or at least I thought he did), and I'll maybe be getting that at some point. Duskling had mentioned Quake Live, whatever that is.

So, what do you think?

Sounds fun!

I even have a game in mind: Legions: Overdrive (http://www.legionsoverdrive.com). It's free, and doesn't require a very advanced computer or gaming parts. Even if your computer is a bit under the requirements (Like mine), you can get a mod that lowers quality at their forums (Here (http://forums.legionsoverdrive.com/threads/legions-lite.24/) is the mod and all the directions for mod setup).

Buggy definately plays Minecraft. I'd be up for it, as long as it didn't require any downloading and installing. I don't have much control over my computer that way. :/ But sounds like fun! :)

Well, now we've got a bit of a problem, since Duskling, your game sounds download/install-y, and that's not a point of interest for Bugs over here, so either Dusk and I do one game, and we all do a different game, or we can just think of one good online game to play. I know that Ace of Spades is a fun voxel fps that only takes about a 5 mb download, and it's not particularly noticable when it's not running, so Bugs, you could probably put in in some obscure file on the C drive and no one would be any the wiser...

but if you actually don't have user privelages to download files to disk, then that's a different problem. Anyone know a good java or flash game that's multiplayer? Starfighter's dead, Runescape is just a grind-fest... (and I need a good game...). I've been trying out a flash game by Xgen Studios called Blast Rage Online, and it's pretty fun. Mochigames makes some multiplayer games, but they're, for the most part, Atari and Nintendo ripoffs and not all that fun. I found a multiplayer roguelike called Tomenet (ASCII graphics, permadeath, tile-based play...) but it also requires a small download (1.5 mb). [It's based on Lord of the Rings sort of idea, with orcs and balrogs and goblins and suchlike, if anyone's interested.]

There's Realm of the Mad God, which is pretty fun for a flash game -- it uses pixel art and a big class system to keep ya playing, and playing in groups is definitely advantageous.

Do any of these sound good? And Duskling, I'll be sure to check out Legions: Overdrive, though I'm not sure it'll be exactly my cup of tea.

Yeah, I guess I could have thought that one through a little better, huh? Ace of Spades sounds pretty fun.

I haven't heard of... any of these, sorry. I'll make sure to give them a shot, though.

This game's pretty fun. I even have a character made already, and an alternate character with some items I was planning to trade, but then I ditched it over a month back since it kind of lost its flavor for me.

Well, you don't have to try these games or anything. I'm just putting out suggestions for games, I guess, but it's kind of hard to find a decent multiplayer game without a download.

I think the only ones worth considering are Legions (but only for Dusk and I, no go for Bugs); Ace of Spades; I would say Tomenet if I knew if you guys knew anything about roguelikes; Blast Rage, but that's still in Beta, and it's a Flash game so the keyboard controls are a bit glitchy; and maybe Realm of the Mad God (it's more fun to play with friends, but if you really are burnt out on it, then it's not a good idea).

Also, this wouldn't be multiplayer, but I know a singleplayer game or two that have seed-based world generation, so if we coordinated with Teamspeak or a voice-only Skype call, we could compete to get the best score on the same map. Probably not as fun as a real multiplayer game, though.

And it's not like you could have known that Buggy can't install things, Dusk.

The websites for the games I mentioned are
ace-spades.com
tomenet.net
xgenstudios.com
realmofthemadgod.com, and
legionsoverdrive.com

Legions overdrive could still be a possibility. I'd have to look. Sometimes my computer allows me to install without Administrator authorization, sometimes it doesn't. But I'd be up for whatever. Don't feel the need to accommodate my electronic disabilities.

Another possibility is we all gather at Ducky's house and play battleship hot-seat style. :P :3

Well, I can't tonight. My mum's out playing bridge, and I'm supposed to arrange for company at least a day in advance. Say, Buggy, what kind of games do you like, other than the tactical tile-based RPG and the first-person sandbox game? The only reason I ask is, I'm okay with and okay at first-person shooters, but they're not my favourite. Also: time zones? I'm in US Eastern Time.

Hard to say. I'm a fan of tower defense games. Anyways, I'm not at home right now, and can't play anything. In general I'm a fan of tactical games. So, what's say we continue this in PMs?

Yeah, you're welcome to join us. This kinda fizzled out of existence, since we don't seem to be able to find a good free game for us all to play that doesn't require installation or download -- those would appear to be requirements we would have to meet for at least Buggy to be able to join us. If we didn't necessarily include him in this [sorry, Bugs. Good news -- I'll probably be getting Minecraft maybe in a couple of weeks or so, so maybe multiplayer, eh?], there are potentially lots of games we could play, including Ace of Spades.

ace of spades is not available on mac, I tried but couldn't get it to work

Aw... my bad. TomeNet? It's a multiplayer roguelike. Might not be your cup of tea, though. It definitely works on Macs; that much I know for sure. And it might very much be your cup of tea.

I would love to join as well. The only thing is, my graphics card just got broken and I still haven't got a new one. And since we're all fans of tactics, (At least I think so) I think we should join in some online tactics game and make a guild or something, whatever there might be. Join our forces and make a stand ;)

Hey guys! I've got an idea- Board Game Online (http://www.boardgame-online.com/index.php)

The only problem is there might be profanity (Won't go into detail here, PM me if you want a full description).

Other than that it looks interesting, it's basically roll the dice and use your items and skills to get ahead by yourself or as a team(Just read the items' descriptions and you should do fine).

When creating a game, make sure to make it private, then send the link to any forum-goer who is online (Naturally, only those that you know are interested) and willing to play.

Also register with your forum names, just to make it simpler to tell who is who (Namelesskitty, you can use imasexyowl if you really want to, we'll know it's you).

I was actually out of town when you posted that, so that's why no response...

I'll think about it. It sounds potentially fun, but I'm reassessing my time management at the moment (read: decreasing the amount of total fun in my life now so my life is more fun in about ten years), so I'm a no go for now.

I would be good with Legions: Overdrive if everyone still wants to do that, though scheduling might be an issue.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: bugfartboy on August 15, 2012, 09:20:40 AM
Sure. Yeah, scheduling is probably going to be an issue.  I'm in the CDT time zone. My best guess would be Ducky is in the EST US time zone. Since Ducky and Kitty are friends, I'd guess Kitty is in the same time zone as Ducky. And as to Dusky or Kaseke, I'm not entirely sure what time zone either of them are in.

Well Finland is in GMT+3. That's where I live. And school also just started so I'm not willing to do this in the night time. Maybe on the weekends?
Title: Re: Online games?

Soon after school starts this upcoming Friday, almost every weekend of mine is booked. Planning this is going to be complicated. Very complicated.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: ArtDrake on August 15, 2012, 09:23:47 PM
I'm game for most nights, from about 2000 hours to 0200 hours. Time zone is GMT minus five, or EST, meaning that I'm available from 0100 hours to 0700 hours GMT.

My late at night would be Kaseke's morning.

I've got a good alternative to Legions, since my computer struggles with it even with the "Lite" mod (Graphics decrease for better performance).

TribesNext (http://www.tribesnext.com)

It's... well, Tribes 2. ;D

(Keep in mind I won't be able to participate anytime soon because of some troubles with my own PC)

Sadly, I think I can really only fit time in on alternate weekends, holidays, and during the summer. Really restrictive schedule, ya know?
Title: Re: Online games?

It seems fairly interesting. Although scheduling is, once more, definitely going to be an issue.

I'm in, if no-one has any objection. I'm GMT (or daylight saving time), so I'm basically in the middle.

If this ends up the consensus, I'm up for it.

Come to think of it; my computer is decent, my connection is good and downloads aren't a problem. Nothing should really get in the way for me but scheduling, but I'm pretty flexible. Obviously, I'm busy weekdays, but weekends should be fine. Probably.

One other thing: if we can, we should probably make it so we don't actually need everyone to play, just in case something comes up for one of us. Assuming this can happen at all.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: ArtDrake on October 18, 2012, 05:31:03 PM
Why don't we each make a list of the types of games we each like, and then decide on games to play based on who has interests in common?

I'm usually not much for first-person shooters, except for perhaps Ace of Spades, because I have a laptop with a mediocre GPU.
I like roguelikes, and there are some good multiplayer ones.
Turn-based tactics, I like.
RTS's, not so much.
Actually, any turn-based game is good for me.
If anyone here would like to co-op a Super Hostile Minecraft map, I'd be up for it [though, admittedly, I'd have to buy Minecraft first]
I don't really like MMOs much, which, I know, rules out a lot of games. You guys don't have to play with me.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: bugfartboy on October 18, 2012, 10:08:58 PM
A Super Hostile might be fun, but if it's recording material you're looking for, I'd stay away from Minecraft. Over-saturated market when it comes to that. As to what genre of games I prefer, I find it difficult to say. Obviously I enjoy Turn-based tactical games, else I wouldn't be here, would I?
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: ArtDrake on October 18, 2012, 10:19:33 PM
I'm not looking for recording material -- I don't really do videos in the school year, in case you hadn't necessarily noticed. [I agree that there's an oversaturated market]

If only there were a Tactical game... with multiplayer... better yet, one that had to do with Telepath... oh, right.

Maybe this can wait until TT comes out? And then we can have forum matches and tournaments and maybe people would show up on this desolate corner of the internet.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: bugfartboy on October 18, 2012, 10:25:52 PM
Perhaps we
Quote from: Craig
can look forward to playing TT sometime in the next year.
After all, we have half-way been discussing this for quite some few months already.
Title: Re: Online games?
Post by: Steelfist on October 19, 2012, 06:12:10 PM
Once TT is out, that would be perfect. However, we may as well map out a few possibilities.

I'm pretty ambiguous towards roguelikes; it seems they can be good as often as they can be terrible. Obviously, turn based strategy is good - so is RTS, and I do like FPS.

And I, too, hate MMOs.
