Its important to the people, which makes it important. Even if they have no power or influence, they are a symbol to the people.
@im2smart4u: Not by a long shot. The monarchy generates large amounts of revenue through tourism.
The Royal family is an outdated system that is a drain on the British taxpayers.

I find it rather outdated myself.
However, having someone who is not also English say the same makes me curiously uncomfortable.
